A place of your own

Make room for a different pace..

Whether you want a compact garden sauna or a wider home spa setting, the design starts with how you want to spend time there.

01

A private garden retreat

A dedicated place to step away, with privacy, outlook and the route from the house considered together.

02

A compact timber sauna

A carefully planned enclosure that makes room for comfortable seating, circulation and the chosen heater.
03

A home spa setting

A sauna integrated into a wider outdoor space, with room to change, sit and cool down where the brief allows.
Electric or wood-fired

Choose the heat.
Shape the experience.

The heater influences the layout, services and daily routine. We consider it at the start, alongside room volume, glazing and ventilation.

Convenience and control

Electric heaters

Controlled heating without storing logs, tending a fire or removing ash.

  • Temperature controls, with timer or app options on compatible systems.
  • No combustion flue required.
  • Electrical capacity, circuit and connection assessed by a qualified electrician for the chosen model.
  • Still needs warm-up time, ventilation and routine cleaning. Remote operation requires the manufacturer’s safety provisions.
The fire-tending ritual

Wood-fired heaters

The atmosphere of a fire and a more hands-on approach to preparing the sauna.

  • Heat from burning wood, with flame visibility depending on the model.
  • Requires suitable dry fuel storage and ash removal.
  • Flue design, combustion air, clearances and fire protection need specialist consideration.
  • Warm-up time varies. Smoke control restrictions and neighbouring properties may affect suitability.

SPACE TO SLOW DOWN

From sauna warmth to fresh garden air.

Bring the sauna and its surroundings together with a sheltered place to sit and cool down.

An integrated canopy, built-in bench and considered screening can create a comfortable transition between the warmth inside and your garden beyond.

Built around heat and moisture

The details make the difference.

A sauna is a specialist environment. Its materials, insulation, ventilation and heater must work together, with careful attention to every junction and surface.
01

Timber selected for purpose

Interior lining, benches and exterior cladding each have different jobs. Materials are selected for their location and exposure to heat or weather.
02

A sauna-specific enclosure

Insulation, vapour control and junctions are specified for sauna temperatures and moisture conditions, with the selected heater in mind.
03

Airflow and drying

Ventilation is coordinated with the heater manufacturer’s guidance, including how the room dries after use.
04

Comfortable proportions

Bench heights, seating depth, headroom and glazing are designed around the room and the number of people using it.
05

Safe heater integration

Heater sizing, clearances, guards, power supply or flue requirements are resolved with the appropriate specialist input.

06

A setting that works

The base, access, drainage, privacy and external finishes are planned for the garden and its year-round use.

Planning a sauna in Devon

Understand the site. Resolve the requirements.

In England, a sauna for incidental domestic use may fall within permitted development rules for outbuildings. Height, position, land coverage and property restrictions all matter. Listed buildings, designated land and commercial use need separate consideration.

Building Regulations exemptions for small detached buildings are conditional. Under 15m², no sleeping accommodation is allowed for the usual exemption. Between 15m² and 30m², the building must also be at least one metre from any boundary or substantially non-combustible. Electrical and heater installation requirements still need to be checked.

We recommend confirming the proposal with South Hams District Council or the relevant local authority, particularly where a flue, sensitive setting or restricted development rights are involved.

Useful questions

Before your sauna takes shape.

Practical answers to help you plan a bespoke outdoor sauna in Dartmouth or the surrounding South Devon area.

Can you build a bespoke garden sauna in Dartmouth?

Yes. Timber Built designs and builds timber saunas from its Dartmouth base for gardens across the South Hams and South Devon. The layout, materials, glazing and heating approach are tailored to the property and brief.

Electric heating suits a convenient routine with temperature controls and no fuel or ash handling. Wood-fired heating offers the experience of tending a fire, but needs fuel storage, cleaning and a suitable flue. The right choice depends on your site, available services and preferred routine.

Warm-up time varies with the heater, room volume, glazing, insulation, ventilation and starting temperature. We match the heater to the design and use the manufacturer’s guidance rather than promise a single heating time for every sauna.

The sauna can be designed for use throughout the year. The insulated enclosure, weather protection, heater capacity and safe access from the house all matter, particularly in exposed coastal gardens.

A domestic garden sauna may qualify as a permitted-development outbuilding, subject to the property, location, dimensions and use. Listed buildings, designated land and restricted development rights need particular attention. Confirm the position with the local planning authority before proceeding.

Burning wood in a smoke control area requires an appliance exempt for that fuel and use, operated in accordance with its conditions. A sauna heater should not be assumed to qualify. We recommend checking the specific appliance and local requirements before choosing it. Read the official GOV.UK smoke control guidance.

Coordination forms part of the sauna project. We bring the design decisions, materials, specialist work and installation sequence together so the enclosure and its equipment are considered as one complete space.
